Business Ethic
Amassing profits from my business is not my primary motivation for being in business. My goal is to continue creating a sustainable business which affords me a modest livelihood, and which prides itself upon its small, creative, and independent nature; its continued success in bringing the finest quality, most unique and attractive Indian textile designs to market; and working in such a way as to ensure that the talented artisans in India receive fair compensation for their work.
Of course, competing in a marketplace made up of large corporations has its challenges, but I believe the individual experiences and passions which I bring to my work give my collection distinct advantages. Whereas large corporations tend to deal with equally large and impersonal organizations, I have always followed my passion and instinct as an individual traveler, taking my time to "get beneath the surface" and connect with the more rare and inspired creative textile work. My love of culture, as a traveler, and my love of art, as a visual artist, have both served me well in this regard, as well as in my design and materials sensibilities, which are always focused upon nuance and detail. I also carry out all activities of my business myself, working in very simple, cost-effective ways. For instance, when I am on the road doing my extended sales trips, I rarely stay in motels, preferring instead the richer traveling experience of staying in my work van. Honoring the principle of affordability over maximizing profit, I can compete with the prices of larger corporate entities, whose manufacturing volumes are obviously well beyond my own.
The end result is that my customers are receiving a far more unique, personal, and inspired product, attended to in all its details, at a price competitive with that of much larger, mainstreamed manufacturers, whose products become "diluted" because of the inattentions bred by sheer size and a stringent focus upon maximizing profit above all else.
